A Wafer Iron

This hinged tool was used to make thin, delicate wafers that would bear the imprint of the mold, in this case a detailed eagle, perhaps the coat of arms of an American family. For similar examples see Warren, p.89 (a square shaped iron), and Plummer, p.103. Though Plummer says that these delicacies were traditional to the Pennsylvania Germans, they are also found in New England.
